McKnight Looking for Home Win
The Heat will have to put last weekend's narrow defeat to the Leicester Riders behind them, if they are to get a result against a the London Capital outfit on Sunday afternoon at Guildford Spectrum. Player-coach, Chad McKnight, has warned his players that in order to bounce back from last weekend's BBL Championship defeat, his guys must be on their toes. He said: 'I think we will match up well against the Capitals we have beaten them twice this season so we are looking for the same result. We have a few minor injuries but nothing that will keeps guys from playing this weekend. '
With regards to the last game, McKnight identified his own Kenny Langhorne, and the Riders Bradd Wierzbicki, as the outstanding players in the game. He explained: 'Kenny had a good game for us. He played pretty good defense and he had a good shooting night as well. (Bradd) Wierzbicki had a great game for the Riders scoring 36 points and he was 15/15 from the foul line. He added: 'I think it was a very physical game, we played well for about 35 minutes but as you can see that didnt get it done.
In the first two meetings between the clubs, it was the Surrey based side that came out stronger, with a resounding 65-95 win the first time, followed by an 89- 69 triumph in the 10th January fixture at Guildford Spectrum. The opening quarter of the game belonged to the Capital, as a 7-2 finish to the opening period from the visitors saw them lead 14-23.
The second period saw the Heat keep their visitors scoreless for the opening three minutes of the quarter and managed to take a single point lead at 24-23 off the back of a 10-0 run. The visitors maintained their lead throughout the remainder of the period and despite a huge three-pointer from Aaron "LA" Drakeford at the end of the half, the visitors lead 36-40 heading into the locker rooms at the half.
The Heat started the second half with a 5-0 run to lead 41-40, but again the Capital responded with a 6- 0 burst of their own to re-take the lead at 41-46. Both sides continued to trade baskets for the majority of the third period and the Capital held their lead at 45-50 with 4:20 remaining in the third quarter. It was at this point that the Heat broke the game open with a 20-2 cross-quarter tear, including eight points from Chad McKnight and six from Kenny Langhorne, to take the score out to 62-52 with eight minutes left in the game. The Capital tried valiantly to get back into the game, and although Guildford held on for an important victory to cap off a double winning weekend, the Capital will surely fancy their chances on Sunday, as Milek Jivens looks to pick up three more wins in the New Year for his ever-improving team.
