Guildford County Girls Team is Crowned National 3 on 3 Champions

Three girls from Guildford County have won the national British Basketball League (BBL) Schools Championship for Year 8 Girls. Jo Jo Tizard, Chelsea Wilkonson and Kate Evans represented Surrey in the national BBL 3 on 3 championships (in which three players from each team are on the court at any one time). They beat Statonbury School in the Year 8 Girls Final, which was played at the National Indoor Area (NIA) in Birmingham in front of a crowd of over 5,000 people prior to the BBL Cup Final.

Lekan Popoola, one of the Heat coaches who helped to select the Surrey school teams, added, “The Heat trains over 1,000 school children every week and the Year 8 Girls Team from Guildford County have always stood out due to their exceptional talent. All four school teams which represented Guildford played well, with all of them making it as far as the semi-finals. I am very proud of their achievements in the national schools competition. I hope they will all use this opportunity as a spring board to participate in more basketball, whether as part of the school curriculum, after school sessions or part of the Heat Academy.”

The results from the other teams which represented Guildford are as follows:

Year 7 Girls from Guildford County (Gina Curtis, Jess Starling and Zoe Seymour) won five games to make it to the finals. They lost the final 12-4 to Birley Community School in Sheffield.

Year 7 Boys from George Abbott (Toby Helling, Mathew Payne, Arthur Barendson, Ben Menhennett) and Year 8 Boys from Guildford County (Sam Riley Gould, Adam Collins, Rory Cornelius) both made it as far as the semi finals.
